Sino-Kazakhstan oil pipeline being built

Chinanews, Aug.18 - Sino-Kazakhstan crude oil pipeline is about to be
connected with one of the two key oil pipelines under construction in
China.
Yesterday, China Business News learned from China National Petroleum
Corporation (CNPC) that the company has commenced construction of two
pipelines for transmission of refined oil and crude oil in western China.
These pipelines starting from Xinjiang to Gansu will be constructed
simultaneously and laid in the same channel. The pipeline for refined oil
transmission will be completed at the end of this year while the one for
crude oil transmission will be finished around Aug. 28, 2006. These
pipelines cost 14.6 billion yuan (1.8 billion USD) and are 4,000 km in
total length.
After construction of the above two pipelines are accomplished, annual
transmission capacity of refined oil and crude oil will be 10 million
tons and 20 million tons, respectively. The Sino-Kazakhstan crude oil
pipeline to be put in operation at the end of this year will be conjoined
to the refined oil pipeline. By now, 647 km of the refined oil pipeline
has been laid while the proportion of crude oil pipeline welding
accounted for 34% of the project's total volume.
At present, China's imported oil mainly comes from the Middle East and
Africa and 80% of its oil import is transmitted via the Straits of
Malacca. The issue of oil security is becoming increasingly evident. As
central Asia will become one of the biggest energy banks in the world,
construction of oil pipelines in western China builds an oil passage
between China and central Asia.
