Maternity & child care improved in Tibet

Chinanews, Lhasa, Aug. 25 (By Xu Chang'an) - As what she wishes, Zhuoma
gave birth to her first child in safety and became an honorable mother.
Zhuoma is a wife in Bujiu Township of Tibet's Linzhi County. Nowadays,
her successful childbearing is no longer a piece of news. But in the
past, for a woman in high-risk pregnancy like her, it was really an
extravagance that both mother and child could go well after birth.
"When I was pregnant, I went for a check in the regional maternity and
child care hospital; unfortunately, the result shows that I was in
high-risk pregnancy," things still remained fresh in Zhuoma's memory.
Linzhi maternity and child care hospital director Cuoyong said that such
a mother should have been dead in the past. According to traditions in
Tibetan farming and pasturing areas in those days, if a woman will give
birth to a child, she should stay at home and even cannot tell others
about it, not mention seeing a doctor or antenatal examination.
Like Zhuoma, another seven or eight pregnant women were also at Linzhi
maternity and child care hospital. They abandoned the old way of waiting
for a midwife at home which had been passed down for generations and
enjoyed subsidies from the government and safe childbearing at the
hospital.
Tibet has begun systematic maternity and child care efforts since the mid
1980s. In these two decades, through maternity and child care programs
jointly carried out by the Tibet Autonomous Region Government, the
Ministry and Health of China and the United States Children's Fund as
well as the national program of "reducing maternal mortality and
eliminating neonatal tetanus", maternal and neonatal mortality rate has
visibly reduced in Tibet.
