First Confucius Institute in Germany

Chinanews, Aug.18 - In order to popularize Chinese culture and language,
Freie University Berlin (FU Berlin) will establish the first Confucius
Institute in Germany.
According to the Central News Agency, FU Berlin announced that the
Confucius Institute will be affiliated to the East Asia Institute, with a
function similar to Germany's Goethe Institute, and will aim at
popularizing Chinese culture and language. In addition to training
Chinese teachers and compiling Chinese textbooks, FU Berlin's Confucius
Institute will also sponsor seminars and academic sessions to arouse the
interest of various walks of life in Germany towards China and Chinese
culture.
FU Berlin pointed out that at present there are only 20 Confucius
Institutes in the world and they are distributed in Asia, Australia,
Europe and North America. In the future, Berlin's Confucius Institute
will work closely with its partner university in China to coordinate
operation of the Institute.
Being one of the largest departments of Chinese Studies in German
universities, FU Berlin's department of Chinese Studies is also
affiliated to the East Asia Institute and has 340 German students and 210
Chinese students at present.
