Producing tree crown-like iron sparks is a unique stunt with a history of
several centuries performed during the folk sacrificial ceremony to
celebrate the Lantern Festival in Nuanquan Town, Wei County, Hebei
Province. The performer will first melt raw iron into molten iron and
keep the temperature, then scoop molten iron with a willow ladle which
has been steeped in cold water and splash it on the wall to create tree
crown-shaped iron sparks, after which this stunt was named.

Baokang Shadow Play

www.chinanews.cn 2005-08-26 16:00:36

Shadow play was originated in the Han Dynasty (206BC-220AD), formed in
the Tang Dynasty (618-907) and reached its peak in the Southern Song
Dynasty (1127-1279). Shadow play at Zhangjialing in Hubei's Baokang
County is the most representative. It is a folk art adopted by local
farmers to pray for blessings, give thanks to gods and celebrate a good
harvest. The leather silhouettes were made from large sheets of donkey
hulls. They are exquisitely painted and colored. A figure in a shadow
play consists of head, body, arms and legs. Folk artists use a piece of
cloth as the screen and a lamp to cast the shadows on the screen. In old
times, they used oil lamps, and nowadays they use an electric light. A
shadow play usually needs three persons, one to hold the figures and
control their movements, two to play the music. The figures are
classified in a similar way to those in Beijing Opera, and the singing of
those folk artists varies in different regions in China.

Maternity & child care improved in Tibet

www.chinanews.cn 2005-08-26 14:15:32

Chinanews, Lhasa, Aug. 25 (By Xu Chang'an) - As what she wishes, Zhuoma
gave birth to her first child in safety and became an honorable mother.
Zhuoma is a wife in Bujiu Township of Tibet's Linzhi County. Nowadays,
her successful childbearing is no longer a piece of news. But in the
past, for a woman in high-risk pregnancy like her, it was really an
extravagance that both mother and child could go well after birth.
"When I was pregnant, I went for a check in the regional maternity and
child care hospital; unfortunately, the result shows that I was in
high-risk pregnancy," things still remained fresh in Zhuoma's memory.
Linzhi maternity and child care hospital director Cuoyong said that such
a mother should have been dead in the past. According to traditions in
Tibetan farming and pasturing areas in those days, if a woman will give
birth to a child, she should stay at home and even cannot tell others
about it, not mention seeing a doctor or antenatal examination.
Like Zhuoma, another seven or eight pregnant women were also at Linzhi
maternity and child care hospital. They abandoned the old way of waiting
for a midwife at home which had been passed down for generations and
enjoyed subsidies from the government and safe childbearing at the
hospital.
Tibet has begun systematic maternity and child care efforts since the mid
1980s. In these two decades, through maternity and child care programs
jointly carried out by the Tibet Autonomous Region Government, the
Ministry and Health of China and the United States Children's Fund as
well as the national program of "reducing maternal mortality and
eliminating neonatal tetanus", maternal and neonatal mortality rate has
visibly reduced in Tibet.

of the National People's Congress (NPC) and chairperson of the All-China
Women's Federation, said openly that more and more Chinese women
participate in management of state and social affairs. A large number of
excellent women have joined in authoritative organs of various levels.
At the press conference held today by the Information Office of the State
Council, Gu said that at present, 9 women are leaders of the Communist
Party of China or the central government; 25 women act as
ministerial-level officials in the Supreme People's Court, the Supreme
People's Procuratorate and the State Council. Female officials account
for 9.9% of total provincial (ministerial)-level officials. Among the
in-service mayors (commissioners, prefecture governors) of 397 cities
(regions, prefectures), 368 are female. Female representatives take up
over 20% of NPC representatives.
Gu added that since the 4th World Conference on Women was held, China has
strictly adhered to its commitment to the international society and
"regarded gender equality as a basic state policy to promote its social
development". The country has adopted a series of effective measures and
made remarkable achievements in perfecting laws and policies, improving
organizations and organs, and strengthening operational mechanisms to
boost gender equality and development of women.

Share reform extended to whole market

www.chinanews.cn 2005-08-25 09:52:12

(Source: China Daily)

Aug. 25 - The authorities announced yesterday that the share merger
reform would be extended to the whole market, sparking a smart rally on
the Shanghai and Shenzhen bourses.
Five State departments announced guidelines pushing the reform process
ahead since the pilot projects on share mergers had proved successful and
were well received by the markets.
This prepared the ground for expanding the reform, according to the
circular, which outlines the general direction of the process.
The China Securities Regulatory Commission encourages all mainland-listed
companies to choose a suitable time to merge their tradable and
non-tradable shares, the circular said.
Listed companies which complete the merger would be given priority to
raise new capital; and all shares in future initial public offerings will
be tradable.
However, details of the reform procedures have yet to be revealed to the
companies, said Hua Sheng, a well-known economist based in Beijing.
The circular says partners of joint ventures would enjoy the same
favourable policies as before even if their share percentage in the
company changed due to the reform.
The State will retain controlling shares in pivotal industries vital to
national economy or national security, the circular said, because "the
reform is to solve the systemic problems of China's stock market rather
than to sell State shares".

CNPC bid for PetroKazakhstan accepted

www.chinanews.cn 2005-08-23 08:47:10

(Source: China Daily)

BEIJING, Aug. 23 - The nation's largest oil and gas producer, China
National Petroleum Corp (CNPC), yesterday reached an initial agreement
with PetroKazakhstan Inc to buy the Canadian-registered company for 4.18
billion USD, topping the bid from an Indian rival.
"CNPC, through its wholly owned subsidiary China National Petroleum
Corporation International (CNPCI), has participated in acquiring
PetroKazakhstan (PK)," the Beijing-based oil giant said in a statement
yesterday.
CNPC, the State-owned parent of Hong Kong-listed PetroChina, and PK have
entered into an Arrangement Agreement whereby the Chinese oil firm will
pay 55 USD a share, or 21 per cent more than its closing share price on
Friday, PetroKazakhstan said in a statement yesterday.
India's Oil & Natural Gas Corp also bid for the company.
The board of directors of PetroKazakhstan recommended its shareholders
accept CNPC's offer and agreed on a 125 million USD break-up fee.
The deal is expected to close in October, said the Calgary-based oil
company, which produces 7 million tons of crude oil annually.
Industry analysts attributed the winning of CNPC's bid for
PetroKazakhstan to China's solid relationship with Kazakhstan, in
contrast to mounting concerns in the US that China's growing economy and
energy demand may threaten its national security.

Chongqing's Yunyang government announced on Aug. 19 that after over one
month of evaluation by experts, two strange stones moved out from
Yunyang's "Panshi Stone Forest" were estimated to be at a sky-high price
of five million yuan. These two strange stones at sky-high price are both
unique in appearance and named "eagle spreading wings" and "Galloping
Horse." They came into existence in Jurassic times and were originally
located below the water level of 135 meters in the southern bank of the
Yangtze River, which made them more valuable. At present, the "immigrant"
stones are in Binjiang Stone Forest Park in Yunyang new township.
