China economy growing while landing softly

www.chinanews.cn 2005-07-18 14:16:23

Chinanews, Beijing, July 18 (By Wang Yongzhi) - Although the second
quarter confidence index of Chinese economists was at its lowest since
the first quarter of 2004, the latest survey shows that China's
macroeconomy can be expected to maintain relatively fast growth while at
the same time land softly. According to the predictions of more than 80%
of economists, this year's GDP will grow between 8% and 9%.
Ye Zhicai and Pan Jiancheng with the China Economic Monitoring and
Analysis Center (CEMAC) of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS)
explained to reporters that the survey of the confidence index of Chinese
economists conducted this June by the Center shows that this index is 5.2
for the second quarter, declining by 0.51 from the first quarter and is
at its lowest since the first quarter of 2004, but still at a level
indicating satisfaction with the economic situation.
The sixty specialists who are learned about the macroeconomy generally
feel that China's exports and investment growth rates will decline as
expected; inflation will decelerate; FDI tends to also decline; property
values indicate a downtrend; economic "temperature" obviously trending
downwards; the pressure on the RMB to appreciate has been reduced.
Regarding the trends in the second half of the year, 14% of these
economists believe that over the next six months the economic situation
will "change for the better", 11 percentage points lower than the first
quarter; 64% believe that the situation will "remain unchanged", 7
percentage points lower than first quarter's; 22% believe the situation
will "worsen", 18 percentage points higher than the first quarter. The
projected business climate index is 4.66, dropping 1.2 from the first
quarter's figure, showing that economists worrying about the economy
trending downward.
Regarding property prices that are widely watched, experts predict
stability with a downward bias, quite different from the first quarter
when more than half the economists thought that property values would
rise in the next six months. This survey shows that 21% believe that
prices will "rise", 31 percentage points lower than the first quarter's;
43% believe that prices will "decline" and 36% believe that prices will
"hold steady".
Under the circumstance of widespread prediction of declining economic
growth, the majority of economists believe that China's economy will not
show too much volatility and there is a high likelihood of it maintaining
a relatively high growth while landing softly.

Tibetan monk has operation in Linzhi

www.chinanews.cn 2005-07-14 15:57:27

At noon of July 13th, a 68-year-old Tibetan monk had a successful
cataract operation on his right eye. The operation was conducted by
ophthalmologists from the Beijing Tongren Hospital. The monk, from the
Rega Temple in Jinda Village of Jiangda County, arrived in Linzhi after a
40-kilometer journey early in the morning. Tibet has only 50
ophthalmologists and only one for Linzhi. Many patients with eye diseases
resulted from the strong ultraviolet radiation in Tibet can not receive
effective treatment in time.

A shopping mall at Nanjing's Xinjiekou, Jiangsu Province, invited some
students from a martial art school to stage a martial art performance on
the square, attracting many citizens to watch on July 9. In this
midsummer, vendors in Nanjing open "cool-enjoying night market" in order
to dispel high temperature's impact on sales. They organized large-scale
performances on square, children's art festivals and shopping festivals
and resorted to various means such as cash reimbursement to scramble for
business opportunities in summer, leaving no stone unturned to attract
customers.

Although temperature of Xinjiang's Turpan remained over 40 degrees
Celsius for a few days, such high temperature can not stop tourists from
all over China from coming to enjoy hot sand therapy here. Sand therapy
of Turpan is a traditional folk therapeutics integrating sun bath,
magnetic therapy and massage therapy. As the sand in Turpan contains
plenty of magnetite filings, it has been proved evidently effective for
curing arthritis, lumbago and leg pain.

Folk songs in classic novel chosen as national cultural heritage

www.chinanews.cn 2006-04-28 17:54:51

Folk songs in the Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio, which are
honored as living fossils of popular songs in the Ming (1368-1644) and
Qing (1616-1911) Dynasties, were recently chosen into the first batch of
national intangible cultural heritages by China's Ministry of Culture.
These folk songs were old folk melodies popular around Zichuan District
in Shandong's Zibo City and edited by Pu Songling, a litterateur in the
Qing Dynasty, on the basis of prevailing melodies and tunes at that time.
These folk songs become another important cultural contribution that
parallels the success of Pu's classical novel the Strange Stories from a
Chinese Studio. Pictured, entertainers were singing folk songs in the
Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio in an antique-style teahouse.

In order to pass down and carry forward traditional Chinese culture, Qidu
Town of Linzi District in Shandong's Zibo City has taken the lead in
introducing traditional folk culture named Xinzi, a show in which a boy
or a girl in opera costumes is tied to an iron stick that is tightly
fixed onto a socket, to school-based curriculum development in
kindergartens. The Qidu education commission has invited local folk
artists to give lessons in schools for many times and has made costumes
and properties, carrying forward this folk culture.

China to set up effective system for IPR protection

www.chinanews.cn 2006-04-21 09:58:05

(Source: Xinhua)

BEIJING, Apr.21 -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has reiterated his
confidence in China's ability to fight piracy, stressing that IPR
protection is as important as protecting productivity.
"China will establish an effective system for intellectual property
rights (IPR) protection with strict law-enforcement and strong
supervision," Wen said during his visit to an ongoing IPR protection
exhibition held at the Chinese Military Museum in Beijing.
Wen said China's efforts will focus on four aspects: enhancing law
enforcement, improving administrative supervision, broadening
international co-operation and fostering IPR protection awareness among
the public.
The exhibition is open to the public from April 16 to 23. Hundreds of
counterfeit goods are on display and there are booths highlighting the
protection of trademarks, copyright and patents from different government
departments and domestic companies.
"The exhibition shows Chinese government's determination to fight
piracy," Wen said, adding that the government is firm on IPR protection
and it meets the needs of China's modernization drive and is the
country's commitment to the international community.
On the same day, a press conference was held in Beijing by several law
enforcement and IPR departments of the central government to show China's
progress in fighting piracy in 2005.
Wen's comments coincide with President Hu Jintao's state visit to the
United States where the issue of piracy is a hot topic at present.
Meanwhile, in Washington, visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao pledged to
step up protection of intellectual property rights at aluncheon attended
by hundreds of government and business leaders on the second day of his
visit to the United States.
"We will continue to improve the legal system for IPR protection, step up
law enforcement and crack down hard on IPR infringement to protect the
lawful rights and interests of foreign IPR proprietors in China in
accordance with the law," Hu said.
