Folk songs in classic novel chosen as national cultural heritage
www.chinanews.cn 2006-04-28 17:54:51
Folk songs in the Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio, which are
honored as living fossils of popular songs in the Ming (1368-1644) and
Qing (1616-1911) Dynasties, were recently chosen into the first batch of
national intangible cultural heritages by China's Ministry of Culture.
These folk songs were old folk melodies popular around Zichuan District
in Shandong's Zibo City and edited by Pu Songling, a litterateur in the
Qing Dynasty, on the basis of prevailing melodies and tunes at that time.
These folk songs become another important cultural contribution that
parallels the success of Pu's classical novel the Strange Stories from a
Chinese Studio. Pictured, entertainers were singing folk songs in the
Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio in an antique-style teahouse.
