Tan Chengnian, a peasant in Shandong's Weifang, said on July 21 that on
the upcoming National Day, he would fly over Shandong in a plane made by
his own hands as a gift for the day. In May this year, the plane made by
Tan took its first flight and stayed 15 minutes in the air 18 meters
above the ground. After further modification, the plane stayed over 40
minutes in the air about 100 meters above the ground on its second trial
flight on July 5. Tan would re-modify the plane in a few days and attempt
the third trial flight over a longer distance and higher above the ground
than before. If the third trial flight is successful, Tan will try to fly
over Shandong around the National Day this year.
