China to launch lunar probe satellite in 2007

Chinanews, Aug. 9 - China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation
disclosed recently that the closely watched moon probing project is
proceeding smoothly and the first moon orbiting satellite "Chang'e I" is
expected to be launched in 2007.
Ye Peijian, academician of China Academy of Space Technology and chief
designer of "Chang'e I" moon orbiting satellite, revealed that the
planning and initial design of "Chang'e I" moon orbiting satellite has
been completed at the moment and all related professional experiments are
being carried out. It is estimated that in September, research and
development of the real-use satellite will commence and one or two
real-use satellites will be developed and launched in 2007.
Ye said that after the lunar probe flight, China will start soft landing
exploration and auto inspection and exploration on the moon, with the
core missions of landing probes on the moon surface and conducting
scientific exploration. As to engineering project, China will develop and
launch moon soft landing probes and moon surface inspectors (also called
the lunar rover) and establish basic space flight engineering system for
lunar exploration.
According to Ouyang Ziyuan, academician of Chinese Academy of Science and
chief scientist of the moon probe project, at the present stage, China
will commence various scientific researches including survey on moon
surface terrain and geological structure, in situ exploration of moon
surface components, inspection analysis, exploration on lunar internal
structure, lunar dynamics research, sun-earth-moon space radiation
environment exploration and lunar base astronomic observation.
