During the course of a desilting project in the southwest part of
Xiaohai, the city of water in Shandong's Penglai, staff of the desilting
project found three large wooden ancient wrecked ships inside the silt
two meters underground at the harbor on Aug. 3, 2005. At present, one of
these vessels has surfaced but the other two are still lying in silt.
According to initial identification of archeologists, the surfaced one is
a large ancient ship which is 21.5 meters long and 5.1 meters wide and
has been hidden in silt for many years. This is the first time China
discovered large ancient wrecked ships in the past two decades.
