China to control its population within 1.5 bln

Chinanews, Beijing, Feb. 9 (By Sun Zifa) - The Chinese government
revealed in a lately published policy-related document that China will
strive to control its population within 1.5 billion in the coming fifteen
years.
The State Council released a document titled the "outline of planning on
national medium and long-term scientific and technological development
(2006-2010)" today. According to the document, one of the strategies for
the population and health development is to control the birthrate and
elevate the quality of newborns. China will focus on developing key
technologies, such as reproductive health surveillance, and a series of
reproductive medicine, equipment and healthcare products in order to
provide effective scientific guarantee for the goal of controlling its
population within 1.5 billion and the birth defect rate within 3%.
According to this outline which will cast great influence on China's
future development, it is in urgent need of scientific and technological
support to control the population, elevate the population quality and
improve the health level of the people. With a view to this, the outline
gives priority to "safe conception control and birth defect prevention
and treatment," "prevention and treatment of serious noninfectious
diseases like cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases and tumor,"
"prevention and treatment of frequently-occurring diseases in urban and
rural communities," "inheritance and innovative development of
traditional Chinese medicine" and "advanced medical equipment and
biomedical materials."
